John Gieve

Sir John Gieve is a former civil servant, member of the Monetary Policy Committee and previously the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England. Now working in a number of advisory roles, he combines his experience in government departments to speak about the UK's political and financial landscape, and how businesses can deal with governmental policy change.

Before these roles, John served as Private Secretary to Chancellors Lawson, Major and Lamont. He also carried out two spending reviews, for Labour and the Conservatives. Being embedded this deeply in the financial landscape of the UK, John can confidently explain how governments present slight shifts in policy as radical change. Contextualising government strategies for business, John can offer invaluable insight. He served as Permanent Secretary at the Home Office for five years also from 2001-2005.

He was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 2006 until 2009. As a result, he was a key player in the UK’s response to the credit crisis, and efforts to stabilise the UK and international banking systems during the 2008-2009 financial crisis.

John is currently Chairman of VocaLink, the main provider of payment systems to banks in the UK and Europe, a non-executive director of CLS, the world’s forex settlement system, and an independent director of Morgan Stanley International. He is also a trustee of Nesta, the innovation charity, and a director of Homerton Hospital.

His vast experience crossing politics, finance and business means that John is well-placed to deliver an informative and insightful keynote speech.
