Emma Dabiri
Emma Dabiri is one of broadcasters stars of the future as well as the present. She presents Britain's Lost Masterpieces on BBC4 as well as Virtually History on YouTube Originals also appearing on a number of other TV and radio programmes and documentaries. She published her debut book in 2019 with Penguin 'Don't Touch My Hair' looking at why black hair matters and how it can be viewed as a blueprint for decolonisation. She is a teaching fellow in the Africa department at SOAS.
Emma Dabiri is an Irish academic, author and presenter and has a PhD in Visual Sociology from Goldsmiths.
In 2019 Emma's debut book was published by Penguin 'Don't Touch My Hair' became a Sunday Times Bestseller combining a memoir with social commentary and philosophy looking at examining African hair in wider contexts across geography and history. In 2021 her follow-up book 'What White People Can Do Next' was published by Penguin becoming a Sunday Times and Irish Times bestseller where it discussed that we need to talk about racial injustice in a different way where we build on the revolutionary ideas of the past in order to forge new connections.
Emma has been published extensively in academic journals and newspapers across subjects such as African studies, art, sociology, history, film, literature, theatre, popular culture and music. She is also a teaching fellow in the Africa department at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) and
Emma hosts 'Britians Lost Masterpieces' on BBC4 as well as 'Virtually History' on YouTube Originals which is a groundbreaking new series using virtual reality technology to re-live dramatic events in History. Emma has also presented programmes such as 'Back in Time for Brixton' and 'Back in Time Confectioners' as well as 'Is Love Racist' for Channel 4. She has also presented a number of social history films for The One Show as well as hosted radio shows on BBC Radio 4 such as Saturday Review and Front Row. Emma has also authored a landmark Radio 4 documentary titled 'Journeys in Afrofuturism'.
Emma Dabiri gives regular talks and participates in panels at festivals and events bringing her expertise, personality and ideas to live audiences to challenge and educate.
