Andrew Sentance
An expert business economist and the senior economic adviser at PwC, Andrew Sentance excels at explaining complex issues related to economic current affairs and has presented to a wide range of business and financial audiences. The third longest serving external member of the MPC of the Bank of England (2006-2011), Andrew’s period of office spanned the financial crisis, the ensuing recession and the beginnings of economic recovery.
As Senior Economic Adviser at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Dr Andrew Sentance (CBE) is one of the world’s foremost financial experts.
He served as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England (2006-2011), with a period of office which spanned the financial crisis, the recession that followed, and the beginnings of economic recovery.
Throughout his 25-year career, Andrew has spoken and presented to a wide range of business and financial audiences on economic issues, and is a recognised media figure with an impressive reputation for explaining complex economic issues to audiences in an engaging and accessible way.
As the control of inflation became widely discussed, Andrew’s minority, hawkish views were based on his opinion that the international economy vastly influences UK growth, and he believed that higher interest rates would counter UK inflationary pressures.
From his role as Director of the Centre for Economic Forecasting at London University, Andrew joined British Airways as Chief Economist and Head of Environmental Affairs where he became one of the five senior managers, appointed in 2001 by Chief Executive Rod Eddington to prepare the company's ‘Future Size and Shape’ turnaround strategy.
Andrew has also previously worked as Head of Economic Policy and Director of Economic Affairs at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), and was a founder member of the Treasury’s Panel of Independent Forecasters, where he assisted the Chancellor of the Exchequer under John Major’s Conservative Government.
His 2013 book 'Rediscovering growth: After the crisis', was described by John Cridland, Director-General of the CBI, as a ‘concise, objective analysis of the changing global economy since the financial crisis of 2008/9’.
A Cambridge University graduate, Andrew gained his PhDat the London School of Economics, and holds a visiting professorship at the University of London. He is Vice President of the Society of Business Economists, and a part-time Professor of Sustainable Business at the University of Warwick. He is also Chairman of The City UK's Independent Economists Group which represents economists in financial and professional services.
