An Interview With Evelyn Glennie

What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?

In all of my speeches, I encourage the audience to consider their own sound environment and the impact their sounds and the sound around them is having on their professional and personal lives. I always like to challenge steadfast attitudes and my audiences tell me that they have been really challenged and enjoyed the process! The fact that I often use a small variety of percussion instruments allows my speaking engagements to be unique.

How did the corporate speaking begin?

This came about through invitations from companies who have read about me and who felt that my story of triumph over adversity might offer a source of motivation to staff and audiences. I receive many queries asking me how I managed to overcome barriers and why I chose to create the career of the Solo Percussionist which had not previously existed.

Which event has been your favourite, and why?

This is almost impossible to answer because each event is special and offers something new from audiences. I enjoy the variety that I encounter from small independent informal events right up to large corporate events. I particularly enjoy the question and answer sessions which enables me to get to grips with what is required from me and what audiences really want to know.

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

I guess the pinnacle of any motivational speaker would be to have the honour of speaking at one of the G8 Foreign Ministers Meetings in the hope of instilling some global listening skills!

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

I have always wanted to perform with Eminem. However, I think I would most like to share a speaking event with someone like the charismatic President of the USA Barack Obama. I have a lot of respect for his speaking style.

What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?

I believe corporate audiences take home a strong sense of empowerment when they have attended one of my speeches. The people in my audiences are often surprised and delighted that what they get from me is different, exciting and definitely not what they were expecting. The feedback I often get is that they will never 'assume' another person's ability until they have explored all avenues.
