Economist  Sir Howard Davies is chairman of RBS and has previously held some of the most esteemed roles in the financial sector, including Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Chairman of the Financial Services Authority, and Director of the London School of Economics and political sciences.

Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Merton College, Oxford, Howard gained an MA in history and modern languages. In 1979 he was awarded a Harkness Fellowship and in 1980 took an MSc in management sciences at Stanford Graduate School of Business, California.

From 1982 to 1987 he worked for McKinsey & Company in London and during 1985-1986 was seconded to the Treasury as Special Adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Upon leaving McKinsey, he moved on to become Controller of the Audit Commission. He moved on in 1992 taking the post of Director General of the Confederation of British industry.

Howard became the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England in 1995 staying for two years, before taking the role as chairman of the Financial Services Authority in 1997. Howard took the role of Director of LSE in 2003.

Additionally, he has chaired the UK Airports Commission and is Member of the International Advisory Council of the China Banking Regulatory Commission

Howard has a keen interest in culture  and has been a Trustee of the Tate, a member of the board of the National Theatre, and chaired the judging panel of the Man Booker Prize in 2007.

Howard has written five books, including ‘The Financial Crisis: Who’s to Blame’ and regularly contributes to The Financial Times, Times Higher Education and Management Today.

As a keynote speaker , Howard is a true authority on all aspects of economics and business and therefore makes an excellent addition to any finance focussed event.
