Liam Halligan

Liam Halligan writes the ‘Economics Agenda’ column in the Sunday Telegraph, is a resident panellist on the current affairs show CNN Talk and a columnist for UnHerd.com. He is a proficient and esteemed keynote speaker and conference speaker who astutely and concisely clarifies the political and economic landscape of the UK and Europe.

Liam is regarded as one of the UK’s leading economics commentators. His first class degree in economics from the University of Warwick and an MPhil (Econ) from Oxford University is a testament to this. His column ‘Economics Agenda’ won him recognition as “Workworld Columnist of the Year” and “Business and Finance Journalist of the Year” at the British Press Awards.

He is also Editor-at-Large of Business New Europe, a leading source of English-language business, economic and political news and analysis covering several global countries across Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. Liam writes regularly for The Spectator and makes documentaries for Channel 4 television.

Previously, Liam worked as a Political Correspondent at The Financial Times, based at the House of Commons – where he proved himself to a shrewd observer of the Westminster scene and a robust, independent thinker. Singled out by the Downing Street Press office as “impervious to spin”, he developed a reputation for courageous, nonpartisan reporting – as detailed in political memoirs written by, among others, Michael Brunson, Peter Oborne and Alastair Campbell.

His FT coverage won him a job at Channel Four News – where, until 2006, he was the programme’s Economics Correspondent. During this period, he received a string of broadcast awards on several occasions – including the World Leadership Forum's "Business Journalist of the Year" award, the coveted "Wincott Award”, the Workworld "TV Programme of the Year" award, and the Bradford and Bingley "Personal Finance Programme of the Year" award.

He has held economics research posts at the International Monetary Fund, the International Food Policy Research Institute, the London School of Economics and the Social Market Foundation.

Alongside his regular columns, Liam has written dozens of articles on economics, politics and international relations for prestigious publications such as: The Wall Street Journal; The New Statesman; Prospect; House Magazine; GQ; and The Parliamentary Monitor.
