Nawal El Moutawakel , the Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, has completed her first visit as Chair to the future host city. Arriving in Rio only four days after being appointed, El Moutawakel, who was accompanied by the IOC’s Olympic Games Executive Director - Gilbert Felli - had three days of meetings in Rio with local organisers and government officials, as well as getting a firsthand look at some of the venue sites.
Promising Partnership
Speaking after the visit, El Moutawakel said, “We discussed how the organisation of the Rio 2016 Games will be managed, and I am convinced that this is a very promising partnership.” She continued, “There is no time to lose when it comes to the organisation of the Games but Rio 2016 is working fast, and wonderful Olympic Games will be delivered if this pace is kept. We are all sailing on the same boat, and we are here to help stage a highly successful event.”
High Level Commitment
Showing Brazil’s commitment to these Games, the meetings were attended by Minister of Sport Orlando Silva, Rio Governor Sérgio Cabral and Mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes, as well as the President of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman. The visit also allowed Nawal El Moutawakel to visit a unit of Rio’s Pacification Police, which had been part of Rio’s presentation during the bid process.
