Kevin McCloud

Kevin McCloud is a great keynote speaker, presenter and awards host. Kevin is best known for Channel 4’s Grand Designs and for his annual coverage of the Stirling Prize (the highest award for contemporary British architecture). Kevin's two ambitions are to entertain and to make the built environment better - and consequently ‘make people feel better’. Kevin is a fabulous keynote speaker on sustainable architecture and the environment.

I would like to express our thanks for your kind contribution on the day. We have been delighted with the achievements across the show.

Kevin admits to an obsession for buildings since childhood: he studied the history of them at the University of Cambridge. Since, he has written about, built and designed buildings, he has lived and breathed every aspect of architecture. He champions issues such as context, the historic environment and sustainable construction, and has been a columnist for The Sunday Times. Kevin also writes for Grand Designs magazine.

Kevin’s other forays into television include Don’t Look Down for BBC2, in which he climbed six tall buildings and Demolition for Channel 4, in which he, George Ferguson, and Janet Street-Porter started a campaign to improve public space in our towns and cities. Kevin appeared on Top Gear in 2008 and Kevin McCloud's Grand Tour of Europe on Channel 4 in 2009. He presented Slumming It in 2010 and continues to appear at the hugely successful Grand Designs Live shows.

Kevin was awarded two honorary doctorates, from Plymouth and Oxford Brookes, primarily for getting rid of the capital 'A' from architecture. He is a recalcitrant patron of several architectural and sustainable charities, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Foresters and a WWF Ambassador. He was awarded an MBE in 2014 for services to sustainable design and energy saving property refurbishment.

When not filming, Kevin runs a product design practice. He has designed lighting for some of the finest buildings in Europe and many great houses - Ely Cathedral, Edinburgh Castle, two European palaces, the Savoy and Dorchester hotels, to name a few. Kevin has also written numerous highly acclaimed books.

Kevin is a much sought-after speaker and awards host in the corporate sector.

Olympic diver and motivational speaker Tom Daley has been immortalised as a sculpture which is on display at Kevin McLoud’s Grand Designs exhibition.
The philosopher, acclaimed author and speaker, Alain de Botton has announced his plans to rent out five houses designed by world class architects to holiday makers as part of a not for profit scheme. This new venture into the world of holiday lettings, Alain says is an attempt to cure the British public of what he believes is a widely held fear of modernist architecture. The houses will challenge the preconceptions of what constitutes a 21st century holiday home in Britain, and the first two houses will be available to rent from late October.
Britain should focus less on building environmentally friendly housing and more on providing “happy” places to live, according to Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud. The presenter journeyed to the Dharavi slum in Mumbai after hearing claims that it might hold some answers to the problems facing our cities. Kevin lived, slept, worked and ate in the slum where disease is rife and it is estimated that there is one lavatory for every 1,400 residents. Kevin believes that the British Government shouldn't worry so much about creating eco-towns, but instead focus on the social aspect of housing, how to make people happier.
