It all began for Jo as a teenager in Australia, staring up at the posters on her bedroom wall and thinking magazine publishing would be a good way to meet pop stars. Working as a junior writer on teen mag Dolly, it was confirmed that she possessed the journalistic flair to match her vast aspirations.
Following a brief stint as a publicist for iconic soap Neighbours, where she gained access to the national press, Jo realised that her future lay in publishing and, in 1992, headed to London for her first job as deputy editor on TV HITS magazine: it was a natural fit.
Things really kicked off after becoming editor of Sugar, the first ‘glossy’ for teenagers, which ultimately changing the face of teenage magazines in the UK. In 1997, she launched B, achieving sales of 220,000 a month, and was consequently appointed as editor of New Woman, where she also increased sales significantly.
On a roll, Jo’s talents took her to the door of Conde Nast’s Glamour; under her editorship, the trailblazing publication was launched as the first ever ‘handbag size’ glossy magazine, which resulted in copies of its revolutionary format becoming available in several other markets, including the broadsheet press. After the initial launch, an extra 50,000 were printed to keep up with demand.
A decade later, Glamour is still the market leader.
Jo’s career has garnered her handfuls of awards, including the coveted BSME award for Editor’s Editor of the Year, and she has appeared on GMTV, Great British Hairdresser, The Apprentice You’re Fired and Gok Wan’s Miss Naked Beauty.
