Alan Titchmarsh, MBE is a famous English broadcaster. The gardener started his career by studying at the Hertfordshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture, before moving to the renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Alan was initially employed as an Assistant Editor of gardening books by Hamlyn Publishing, before moving to Amateur Gardening Magazine in 1976, taking up the Deputy Editors post, before going freelance in 1979. The gardener has proved his green fingers are also skilled at writing, having published more than 50 gardening books, and writing gardening articles for BBC Gardeners' World and Radio Times magazines, along with the Daily Express and Sunday Express newspapers.

Famed for his television presenting, Alan first appeared on our screens on the BBC television show Nationwide as a horticulture expert. This interest in television led to him being invited to present coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show for BBC television in 1983, something Alan has now hosted every year to date.

He has also appeared on other BBC shows, such as Breakfast Time and Open Air, and ITV shows Love Your Garden and Masterpiece. In these roles, he has appeared as either a guest presenter or a gardening expert, providing commentary and answering viewer’s questions.

In 1996 Alan took over as host of another long-running BBC television program, Gardeners' World with the show being filmed in his own garden. In 1997, he took gardening to the masses with a popular BBC One television series, Ground Force in which he and fellow presenters Charlie Dimmock and Tommy Walsh would perform a makeover on a garden. The show has travelled as far as USA and South Africa, where a memorable episode saw the Ground Force team makeover Nelson Mandela's garden. Globally recognised as the green-fingered guru, Alan’s presenting success and horticultural knowledge has cemented him as a gardening authority.

Away from the gardening world, Alan has had spells presenting Songs of Praise, and a series of programs on BBC Radio 2 where he played a selection of light classical music.

Alan has been appointed with an MBE and awarded the title of Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire in 2001. An ambassador for over 50 charities and immortalised in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, Alan is truly a gardening authority. Perfect for presenting awards ceremonies and hosting event, Alan’s friendly persona and acute professionalism makes him an excellent choice.
